  • An estimate is a complimentary evaluation used to determine the likely auction value if an item were sold at auction – in the event you may be interested in selling.
  • An appraisal is a formal written valuation prepared for legal reasons such as insurance, trust and estate or tax purposes.

DuMouchelles offers formal written appraisals for a fee when required for legal reasons. Appraisals include on-site evaluation and research by a team of subject matter experts. More information about our Appraisal Services process and scheduling an appointment is here.

When necessary, we can help arrange authentication by recognized specialists for rare or particularly valuable works.

  1. You may submit photos* through our online evaluation form; or
  2. Visit our gallery every Wednesday and Saturday from 11 AM – 4 PM**. To ensure we can give each item proper attention, we can review up to five pieces during walk‑in evaluations. If you have a larger group, we suggest starting by submitting photos online. For fine jewelry, larger quantities may be accommodated.
  3. If you have a larger collection or estate, you may submit photos online or call us at (313) 963‑6255. On‑site visits and virtual tours may also be arranged, typically after an initial review of photographs.

* Please include 2 photos per item – the full piece and any signatures/marks. For paintings or framed works, include the back.  For estates or multiple items, submit room photos and a few key objects—we’ll follow-up if more details are needed.

No. DuMouchelles provides complimentary auction estimates for those considering the sale of fine and decorative art, jewelry, luxury objects, and estate collections ranging from traditional to modern. There is no obligation to consign; however, our evaluations are intended for clients with a genuine interest in selling. This initial review is an opportunity to understand potential auction value and explore your options with our specialists.

DuMouchelles focuses its valuations on items that are appropriate for auction, where we can provide the most accurate and market-driven estimates. If a piece is not a fit for auction, we may still offer general guidance when possible; however, a valuation is not always possible.

In these cases, our specialists will do their best to point you in the right direction and may recommend alternative resources or other people who are better suited to assist.

Photo submissions are typically reviewed within 1–2 weeks.

We conduct auctions monthly. Once your property is accepted for consignment, they can usually be placed in auction within approximately 5 to 8 weeks, depending on the auction schedule.

Within approximately one week after the auction, you will receive a preliminary settlement report showing which lots sold and their hammer prices.

Payment is issued after the sale is completed and buyer funds are received and cleared, typically within about 30 business days after the sale.

After you submit a request, the specialists at DuMouchelles will review your information and follow up with guidance on next steps, whether or not your property is suitable for auction.

If your items are accepted and you choose to move forward, you will receive a Consignment Agreement outlining the terms of sale. Once the agreement is completed and your property is received at our gallery, it is fully insured while in our care.

From there, each item is researched, professionally photographed, and cataloged for inclusion in an upcoming auction. You can follow your property through every stage—from catalog publication to final sale at the online auction.

You may bring property directly to our Detroit gallery, or we can help coordinate shipment with one of our recommended professional shippers who can provide you with quotes.

For smaller property such as jewelry, they may be sent via an insured carrier.

Consignors receive the hammer price of each sold lot, less commission and any agreed-upon fees. At DuMouchelles, commission is tiered, meaning higher-value items typically benefit from a lower percentage rate.

All terms, including commission and any applicable fees, are clearly outlined in the Consignment Agreement before you decide to move forward—ensuring full transparency throughout the process.

Your property will be featured in the DuMouchelles auction catalog, on the DuMouchelles website and on partner bidding platforms such as LiveAuctioneers, Invaluable and BidSquare, reaching millions of collectors worldwide.

Select lots may also be highlighted through direct mail, print advertising, digital marketing, and targeted outreach to our network of collectors, dealers, museums, and galleries.

Auction estimates are based on comparable works sold at auction, condition and quality, rarity, current market demand and provenance (the documented history of ownership and exhibitions). Our experts examine the objects, access our proprietary databases and research auction records to assess the value.

Estimates are also informed by the experience and judgment of our specialists, drawing on decades of market knowledge – especially for unique or rare objects.

In most cases, property is offered without reserves to encourage competitive bidding and achieve the strongest results. In certain circumstances, a confidential minimum price may be discussed with our specialists when the Consignment Agreement is finalized.

Once your property is received and accepted for auction, it is covered under DuMouchelles’ insurance policy while in our care.  Insurance coverage is included as part of our standard consignment fees.

Within approximately one week after the auction, DuMouchelles provides a preliminary settlement report outlining which lots sold and their corresponding hammer prices. Final payment is issued once the sale is completed and buyer funds have been received and cleared. This typically occurs within approximately 30 business days following the sale.

If a lot does not sell, it may often be re‑offered in a future auction.

If it is not re-offered, arrangements must be made to pick up the property within 10 business days after notification. Property not collected within that time may be subject to storage fees.

Yes. DuMouchelles regularly assists families, attorneys, trust departments, and advisors with the evaluation and sale of estates and larger collections.

Yes. DuMouchelles auctions are conducted live and online. Consignors can follow bidding in real time through our website and partner bidding platforms. You are also welcome to attend our live auctions in person.

DuMouchelles specializes in the secondary art market, meaning artwork that has already been sold through galleries, collectors, or previous transactions.

For this reason, we are generally unable to provide valuations for artwork submitted directly by the artist. In these cases, a gallery, dealer, or primary market specialist is often better suited to assist with pricing and representation.
