JAPANESE LACQUER OVER HAND CARVED WOOD SCULPTURE 19TH.C. H 7.5" THE HOLY PRIEST NICHIREN DAISHONIN
The Holy priest Nichiren is depicted in an exquisitely carved and lacquered sculpture seated in dhyanasana with a Lotus Sutra scroll in his left hand. Figure carved from a single piece of wood seated on a 5 tier pedestal. Width 5".
The right hand, which would normally hold his Keisaku appears to have been damaged long ago and the Keisaku is missing. The front right corner of the pedestal base has been damaged and restored with gold paint. there are other areas of the pedestal that may have older restorations. Lacquer damage on back right side of figure and an older restoration on the back of his right shoulder (illustrated). Whilst DuMouchelles only guarantees this work as 19th. c., there is a strong potential for the work to be from an earlier period.
